Less is more

Dutch artist Allon Verheul creates beautiful paper birds by cutting out tiny parts and leaving the rest up to the viewers imagination. He works with a scalpel and uses different patterns for feathers and other distinctive parts of the birds which results in many extra details.

What a relief

When a colleague asked me to build her a website to show off her work online, all I knew was that she made beautiful bronzes, paintings and scrolls. In her studio, however, I also discovered a good number of beautiful reliefs. And I fell in love immediately.

Relief by Victorine Loomans

Her work radiates vitality, movement and sensuality. Looking at it makes me happy and that is what art should do; generate emotion of any kind.

Do yourself a favor and visit her website here.

Ceramic whistles

You’ll find ancient folk instruments all around the world. The best-known instruments were flutes, whistles, and ocarinas of clay. These instruments were often decorated with symbolic figures, and were generally stylized to resemble animals, metaphysical entities, or people.
There are whistles and ocarinas representing ocelots, iguanas, frogs, chameleons, crickets, turtles, parrots and a great number of other birds. These ancient instruments can generate extraordinary sounds depending on their shape and size

Nowadays you can still learn to make these wind instruments. The Mexican artist Osvaldo Padrón for example, has a broad experience as a teacher (both in Mexico and The Netherlands) and makes wind instruments that are rooted in the tradition of the pre-Hispanic culture of the Aztec in Mexico.

Like to make your own ceramic flute?
On November 11th & December 9th, 2017 Osvaldo organizes the workshop 'Ceramic Flutes' that will take place at Keramiek Atelier Patty Schilder, located in the heart of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  There are only a few places left, so be quick to sign up here.

The flight of Ikaros

Imagine.

Imagine escaping by
simply spreading your wings
and letting yourself be
carried away by the wind.
Going higher and higher,
seeing the world below you
getting smaller and smaller.
Unaware of the danger.
Deaf to the advise not
to fly too close to the sun.

Imagine the intense heat.
The smoldering wings.
The flames.
The fall.

Imagine.

This wall object will be exhibited at Gallery Stam as from May 21, 2017.

Art against Trump

The inauguration of Trump as president of the United States has left many people shocked and uneasy. Lately artists worldwide are becoming more and more vocal about Trump.
WG Kunst agrees that it’s time for action. They’ve called upon artists to respond to Trump in the form of a work of art.

More than 20 artists have responded and created an artistic statement. It will be a varied exhibition in which various disciplines are showcased. There will be paintings, drawings, cartoons, three-dimensional work, stories, and poems.

Perfect imperfection, it’s not

According to the Latin from which the word is derived, perfection is the finished state of something. Imperfect would therefore only mean that it’s just not finished yet.
My work entails objects that might look like things that once were perfect (or nearly perfect), but have now entered a decrepit state. And that’s exactly what I aim for.
I see the strenght of color, or the lack of it, the worn surfaces, rough edges, oxidized details & fading texts or images, and from it I read the underlying story.
To say that my work samples the art of imperfection, would therefore be doing it injustice. It’s never solely about the objects, always also about the stories.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Clockwise: "Dearest friend..." by Darya von Berner; "Paths Crossing" by Ralf Westerhof; "Run Beyond" by Angelo Bonello; "Today I love you" by Massimo Uberti & Marco Pollice.

The Amsterdam Light Festival is a festival of light, art and water. From November 28 2015 to January 17 2016, Amsterdam will be transformed into a true city of lights with the help of contemporary light artists.
The festival offers talented light artists a platform to present their latest work. One of the artists is Aleksandra Stratimirovic, whose 'Northern Lights' sculpture will cross the River Amstel.

Treat yourself to a spectacle of light. You can either enjoy this festival by boat or on foot. The boat route, Water Colors, offers a unique view of the city from the perspective of Amsterdam’s famous waterways. Whereas the walking route, Illuminade, winds its way through the culturally rich neighborhoods in the eastern part of Amsterdam. Also keep an eye out for guided tours and an extensive side-programme that will see a host of activities and events take place at museums, theatres, restaurants, shops and other locations in Amsterdam.

Lighten up! Celebrate the dark days of winter with art, light and water!
